Tourist Guides are the representatives of the cities, regions and countries for which they are qualified. It largely depends on them whether visitors feel welcome, wish to stay longer or decide to return. They contribute considerably to the perception of the destination. Tourist guides help travellers understand the culture of the region visited and the way of life of its inhabitants. They play a special role, on the one hand, in promoting cultural and natural heritage and, on the other hand, in helping its sustainability by making visitors aware of its importance and vulnerability.
The tour guide must possess:
a thorough knowledge of the works of art, monuments, archaeological heritage, natural beauty and environmental resources of the locality in which the profession is to be exercised.
The technical ability to convey to visitors, in an interdisciplinary manner, knowledge about each tangible and intangible asset of the cultural and environmental heritage and the values it carries.
The ability to implement a scientifically correct illustration/interpretation that is appropriate for all audiences, selective and concise, clear also in a foreign language and that, in a pleasing manner, educates the audience to interest in and respect for the cultural and environmental heritage, customs, traditions and cultures of others.
An exact knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
A direct knowledge of the reality of the places and assets, i.e. their location, logistics, access and use, road conditions and travel times, acquired and constantly updated through frequent inspections in the area of practice, enabling guided tours to be carried out on time and in the proper manner.
